A sinking pedal is especially concerning because it suggests the system may not be holding pressure. Repeatedly pumping the pedal can sometimes make it feel firmer for a short time, but that does not make the vehicle safe to drive.

Worn Brake Pads and Related Components

Worn brake pads are better known for causing squealing, grinding, or longer stopping distances than for creating a truly spongy pedal. Still, severely worn pads can increase pedal travel because the caliper pistons must extend farther to bring the pads into contact with the rotors.
